History of the Hospital Around 1913 Dr. Pitts and Mrs Henderson built a private hospital in Rhodes St closing the prior Leonard St establishment. It continued to operate until an extraordinary meeting of shareholders of Waimate Private Hospital Ltd. in 1951 decided that so serious had become the staffing problems that the hospital must be offered for sale. It was then let as separate apartments for residential purposes and some years later converted to a private home for aged persons under the name of Woodham Lodge Rest Home. When the owners of Woodham Lodge could no longer meet the requirements of legislation in 2004 the home was sold to become a private residence and boarding house called The Nest.
