About the Karaka Community The attractive area known as Karaka extends west of the Southern Motorway at Papakura and Drury, to Kingseat Road. The area comprises a mix of new housing estates, rural/Lifestyle holdings, and a few large working farms. The lifestyle and farming area of Karaka really begins once you have crossed the bridge from Hingaia Road to Linwood Road. Here you find rolling green fields, many offering substantial quality homes. The Karaka Bloodstock Centre is situated next to the motorway at Papakura. It's famous for the yearling sales, with huge sums paid. Crowd-watching for famous faces is a popular pastime here! But not everyone living here owns horses or livestock. If it's the country lifestyle you want, but still work in town, there is always someone locally looking to graze the land for you, whilst you enjoy the privacy and open spaces around. There are two great local primary schools - Karaka School on Blackbridge Road, and Te Hihi School on Linwood Road, both covering New Entrants to year 8. Being country schools, they still hold Calf Club Days each year, generally in October. The private Strathallan Campus (from pre-schoolers to year 13) is situated in Karaka at the end of Hayfield Way. For pre-schoolers, there's Karaka Play Centre, where you can meet other parents of young children - a great way for friendships to develop - and there's also Karaka Learning Centre, handy to the motorway at Papakura. Secondary Schooling is zoned for Rosehill College in Papakura, with buses running through the district. For the sports minded, the Karaka Sports Grounds offers Rugby in the winter, cricket and touch rugby in summer, athletics, indoor bowls, and tennis, and has its own Club Rooms, which offer refreshments and meals. Just recently more land has been purchased, and there are plans for further development. For the golfers, the Pukekohe Golf Course on Karaka Road is a popular venue for a pleasant round with friends. St Margarets Church has services every second Sunday, with Sunday School running once a month. Karaka could be any lovely part of rural New Zealand - except, of course, that it's so close to urban amenities: Pukekohe is less than 10 minutes' drive south, Papakura is about the same to the east, and Auckland City within about 30 minutes drive off-peak. With Manukau Shopping Centre and Sylvia Park both straight down the motorway, there's no shortage of variety for shopping needs. Eating out, there are a few excellent local cafes, including the ever-popular St Margarets Country Garden Cafe, and the Karaka Country Market on Linwood Road offers fresh produce and coffee too. |
