This isolated beauty is practical. Not two things you associate usually, but it's true.

The owner tells me that it is as far as you can go by car on this island but there is car access over a farm to the top of the section.

However, the owner tells me by boat it is another story.

The Bay is only 6 and a bit nautical miles from Maraetai and most of the owners have boats that are all berthed there. One extended family who own a few baches at one end of the Bay run a family ferry service where they pop over for groceries and family or friends that want to visit at the drop of a hat. One man says it takes eleven minutes for him to come across in his motor boat but I will leave you boaties to work out the details. The long and the short of it is the Bay is oh so convenient by boat.

You are then taken to a different world of old New Zealand: baches, sheds and Pohutakawas. All owners have chosen to bring in the big stuff by barge and build/place everything on the building platform that runs just above the beach. No one uses the road or builds up top; why would you, the owner says, when you can sit in a sheltered bay just above the beach.

This section is a cracker. Framed by two Pohutakawas that give you privacy from the few other baches, you look out to sea. Superb. Peaceful. The Dream.
